The retirement age of 55 is not causing difficulty in terms of the quality of teachers and administration in schools.
This has been stressed by Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy when asked a question by NFP Leader, Professor Biman Prasad on whether the minister will recommend the retirement age to move up to 60 years.
SODELPA’s Mikaele Leawere asked the minister if he could extend the retirement for those teachers who turn 55 in the middle of the year to the end of the year to allow time for smooth transition and preparation of replacements towards the end of the school year.
Doctor Reddy says all the teachers that are going to retire know the retirement policy and they know the particular day they have to retire and they are also told three months in advance from their retirement date.
He says the current retirement age is not causing any difficulty as they have two pools of teachers who are on stand-by for the retired ones.
Reddy also says that the retired experienced teachers are not replaced by the new graduate teachers.
