A research has found that electricity can be generated from seawater in the Pacific.
The Korean Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering say coastal communities in the global tropical belt within 20 degrees of the equator can be used for this exercise.
Director of the South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission or SOPAC, Professor Michael Petterson said this exercise can only be carried out in the Pacific as we have cold and warm water temperature in the sea.
He said the difference in sea water temperature in Fiji and other Pacific countries will allow this technology to drive cold and hot water which is needed to generate energy from the turbines.
A presentation was today made in Suva by the Korean Research Institute on Sustainable Utilisation of Ocean Thermal Energy in the South Pacific region.
