The United States Assistant Secretary of Defence for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs Randall Schriver is in the country and will be exploring areas to improve their relationship with Fiji.
Schriver says that part of their mission is to listen and understand the concern of their partnership in the region.
He adds that he has held talks with the Deputy Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and also representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Schriver says that they have discussed areas where they could be provide assistance in terms of security given the security challenges and interest in protecting Fiji’s maritime spaces.
He also says that given Fiji’s long and proud tradition of contributing to international peacekeeping, they have discussed how they can support those efforts in training and supporting the efforts of other alliance who are assisting Fiji in that regard.
Schriver also says that next year, representatives from the Nevada States National Guard will be visiting Fiji to consult with the Fiji Military Forces and develop programmes based on the interest of the Fiji Military.
Schriver says he will meet Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum later today.
