Fiji has exported a total estimated value of $125M of Fish in 2016/2017.
The Ministry of Fisheries Annual Report for 2016/2017 that has been tabled in parliament shows that Fiji exports frozen fish that includes, deep water snapper, sunfish, swordfish, blue marlin, striped marlin, mah-mahi, wahoo, beachde-mer and tuna.
The Ministry of fisheries highlighted that the contribution of the fisheries sector to the economy was 1.8% during the 2016-2017 financial year and the ministry furthered its performance with the continued assistance from its development partners like UN Food and Agriculture Organization to draft its first ever National Fisheries Policy.
The Ministry of Fisheries during the 2016/2017 financial year focused on improving its research and development competencies to assist resilience of coastal‑based villages and settlements to natural disasters through adaption strategies.
It aimed to achieve this by restocking the reefs, re‑establishing Makogai Fisheries Station and improving the enforcement to minimize illegal, unregistered and unregulated fishing and better manage their iQoliqoli’s or customary fishing grounds.
