The National Substance Abuse Advisory Council says 171 students were drinking kava in primary and secondary schools in the last three years.

A report by the council has revealed that there was an increase in students drinking kava in schools between 2014 and 2015 but there was a decrease in the reported cases last year.

There were reported 55 student kava drinkers in 2014, 82 in 2015 and 34 were recorded last year.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Report 2016 states that kava related offences were more commonly recorded in primary schools last year.

30 out of the 34 kava related offences in schools last year were recorded in primary schools.
