The sound of the bugle at the National War Memorial Site this afternoon in Veiuto brought members of the security forces and ex-servicemen to attention as members of government, the diplomatic corps and the families of our fallen soldiers observed a moment of silence to commemorate Remembrance Day.
The Remembrance Day service was attended by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama and several cabinet ministers.
The commemoration was also attended by the high commissioners in Fiji as well as representatives from the opposition.
National Federation Party Leader, Biman Prasad and Social Democratic Liberal Party representative Semesa Karavaki were present at the celebration.
Fijivillage spoke to Lieutenant Colonel Tim Woodman from the British Armed Forces and he shared his thoughts on Remembrance Day.
Meanwhile, 83-year-old retired Private Semesa Rokosuka who joined the army in 1951 shared how he lost friends and relatives in the Solomon campaign.
He said the stories of our fallen soldiers should never be forgotten as their sacrifice was heroic and bold.
Remembrance Day is celebrated every year on the 11th day of the 11th month which is in line with the same day the armistice agreement was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany to engage in a ceasefire.
