Fiji’s first Rehabilitation Centre for Street Beggars has been built in Colo-I-Suva.
The new facility, which is expected to open soon, is in partnership with the Nazrene Church and the Ministry for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.
Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Sofia Akbar had made an earlier visit to the street beggars assuring them that they will now have a place to live in which they will call their home.
The rehabilitation centre will provide training to the unfortunate on how to earn money through income generating programs.
Akbar said that the Government has funded $100,000 so that more than 24 people can be trained and accommodated at the centre.
She said that the Ministry would work together with the Ministry of Health to provide care and medical treatment for these people.
Meanwhile, the profiling exercise would continue in Suva as well as other cities and towns in the coming weeks.
