The $105 million modernisation of the Nadi International Airport shows that the reforms implemented for Airports Fiji Limited is working.
Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the funding for the whole project is also sourced by AFL without any government input.
He said rental at the airport should get premium pricing.
This was not the case in the past.
Airports Fiji Limited Executive Chairman Faiz Khan said they have run a tender process.
Through the bidding process, Khan said the duty free outlets are now paying 15 times more rental than what they were paying before.
After the modernisation of the Nadi International Airport, the core duty free operators will be Tappoos and Prouds.
There will be other speciality retail outlets, food outlets including Burger King, a children’s play area and a prayer room amongst other modern facilities.
It was earlier revealed that AFL is targetting to make a massive profit of $33 million this year and $46 million next year.
Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum earlier said that AFL plans to deliver about $250 million in capital upgrades over the next five years.
This is part of the company’s plans to develop the infrastructure of the 15 airports operated by AFL.
