There is a reduction in the number of convicted felons that resort back to crime after they have been released.

This was stated by the Commissioner of Fiji Corrections Service Francis Kean at a press conference that was held at the Women’s Correction Center at Korovou today.

Kean says that as of 31st July 2018, the rate of convicted felons that resort back to crime after they have been released was recorded at 1.5% which is equivalent to 27 people.

For the same period last year, the rate was 4.7% which is comparable to 72 people.

Kean adds that this 1.5% is the lowest rate recorded over the past 10 years.

The Corrections Service Commissioner stated that this was all due to a strategy put in place by the Fiji Corrections Service known as “Incare to Throughcare”.

This strategy focuses on the rehabilitation of inmates not only in Correction facilities but at home as well after they are discharged.

Kean says that it is imperative that the Fiji Corrections Service works together with the communities to reduce the rate of  convicted felons reoffending.

The Fiji Corrections Service today signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Namosi and Rewa care network with the hope to work together in the future to rehabilitate discharged inmates in their respective communities.
