A 55-year-old farmer of Rakiraki village, Yale in Kadavu has been sentenced to 6 years and 8 months imprisonment for cultivating marijuana.
Anare Bai was charged with one count of unlawful cultivation of Illicit drugs.
The court heard that a team of police officers conducted a raid in Kadavu and uprooted 227 plants of marijuana from two of Bai’s farms on the 18th of January last year.
While sentencing Bai, Judge Justice Priyantha Fernando considered the mitigating factors that Bai is a first offender and he also co-operated with police in their investigation.
Bai has been given a non-parole period of 5 years and 8 months.
