A 37-year-old farmer of Rakiraki will spend twelve years behind bars for raping a 16-year-old girl in 2013.
The court was told that the girl’s father had passed away and her mother was in a defacto relationship with another man.
The brother of the girl wanted her to stay with the 37-year-old man’s family because he did not like his mother’s relationship with another man.
The 37-year-old man was convicted for four counts of rape.
In the first incident, the man raped the girl when his wife was away from home. The man had threatened the girl with death.
Justice, Aruna Aluthge noted that the man was the guardian of the girl and he breached the trust.
Justice Aluthge further said that the man maintained his not guilty plea throughout and failed to save the girl from giving evidence of sexual nature which would have been a distasteful experience for her.
The Judge has imposed a non-parole period of eight years.
