The Race for Water Foundation has made a stopover in Fiji as part of a series of events that is dedicated to the preservation of marine life and awareness on marine plastic pollution.
Race for Water Foundation Project Manager Camille Rollin says they are here to spread the word on the importance of the ocean and how island communities in places like Fiji are most affected by plastic pollution.
She adds that recent studies show that 33 out of 34 commercial fish species found have micro plastic contamination.
Rollin says that during their stopover they will be taking part in a series of events in the country including a beach clean-up at Wailoaloa beach this Saturday and school visits that is scheduled for next Thursday and Friday.
Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau says Fiji is like any other island nation which relies on the ocean and its resources for survival.
Koroilavesau hopes that these innovative activities will ensure the sustainable use of the ocean and its resources for the future generations.
