More than 130 soldiers are expected to be deployed to Qamea Island to assist the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji to eradicate the giant iguana, commonly known as the American Iguana.
This is a joint operation between Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji.
Authority’s Executive Chairman, Xavier Riyaz Khan said the joint operation with the RFMF is the result of the priority the government has placed to reduce the iguanas.
The operation will start next month beginning with Qamea Island and then moving to Matagi, Laucala and Taveuni.
Meanwhile, RFMF Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho and his team will be in Qamea for a two‑week period where they will be trained by Biosecurity Authority of Fiji officers.
