A two weeks carpenter training for rural carpenters was completed by the villagers of Qelekuro in Tailevu.
Speaking at the closing of the training Deputy Secretary for the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development Loata Vakacegu said that government’s vision is to raise the resilience of homes and shelter in the rural areas.
Vakacegu told participants that a significant amount of housing damages experienced during Tropical Cyclone Winston were experienced in our rural communities and that the rural carpenters training is an initiative to raise the standards of our homes and to reduce risks to cyclones and other extreme weather events.
She says the rural carpenters training program is aimed at teaching construction skills and techniques for quality and durable homes.
Government initiated the program in order address the demand for carpenters outside urban centers and to raise the standards of our homes and to reduce risks to natural disasters.
The Rural Carpenters Training is funded by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management and is being implemented by the Ministry’s Rural Housing Unit.
