‘This is the most undemocratic constitution and it fits dictatorship well’.
These were the words of former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase during the Social Democratic Liberal Party campaign meeting in Samabula East last night.
Qarase said the constitution was imposed on the people.
He also said under the constitution immunity from the 5th of December 2006 events to date is broad and some lawyers in Fiji have told him that it’s hard to find this immunity provision in any constitution in the world.
Qarase also said this means that people are already immune under the 2013 constitution from now until the first sitting of Parliament even before committing an offence.
The former Prime Minister said it seems impossible to amend the 2013 constitution because it will require the approval of 75% of members of Parliament and 75% of registered voters.
Qarase said Fiji has never had a national referendum and this is hard because not all of the registered voters will cast their votes on the 17th of September.
About 80 people attended the campaign meeting last night.
Meanwhile, SODELPA will launch their manifesto this Friday.
