President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatakau

“Levuka belongs not only to the people of Levuka and Ovalau but to all Fijians.”

These are the words of the President of Fiji, Ratu Epeli Nailatakau during the launching of Heritage Initiatives and Projects at the Heritage Site in Levuka yesterday.

During the ceremony he said that the international recognition of Levuka as a World Heritage Site is a milestone decision in Fiji’s history because there is no better way to protect the heritage values of Levuka for all of the people of the world.

The President said that heritage is essential to the people and nation since it enables Fiji to progress as the world changes.

He said that we should not only look at the economic development but also the cultural and heritage development of our country.

Meanwhile he paid tribute to the former capitals’ forefathers who commenced their journey almost 200 years ago.

Nailatikau said that their hard work and sacrifice have paved the road for freedom and prosperity that we all enjoy in Fiji today.

The four initiatives that were launched include the Levuka Town Album, the Levuka Word Heritage logo, the Levuka Landscape Plan and the Fund a Heritage Project Catalogue Book.
