President, Jioji Konrote says the government has spent about $400 million every year to treat NCD‑related illness adding that it is a lot of money which could be better utilized in other sectors such as agriculture and education.
He made this comment while launching the Ministry of Agriculture’s Backyard Gardening Initiative in Tavua.
Five families were awarded a backyard gardening kit worth $65 which included seedlings, potting bags, garden soil and seedlings for crops and fruit trees.
The purpose of this initiative is to spur backyard gardening in urban and peri‑urban areas for food security and nutritional improvement.
