Pregnancy complications occur in 15% of pregnant women in Fiji including the Pacific and neither can be predicted nor prevented.
This was revealed at the opening of the 11th Pacific Society for Reproductive Health meeting in Suva yesterday.
This meeting was opened by the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
It was highlighted that women in the Pacific often face complications during pregnancy because of the lack of integration and co-ordination between district hospitals and primary care services.
There were also discussions at the meeting on the poor maintenance of equipment and interruptions in essential drug supplies in hospitals and family planning.
As a solution to some of these issues, the Pacific Society for Reproductive Health launched the first Pacific Emergency Maternal and Neonatal Training manual yesterday.
More than 250 delegates from different countries around the Pacific are part of the 11th Pacific Society for Reproductive Health meeting which will end this Friday.
