The International Labour Organisation estimates that population ageing and growth of working-age population will occur at a much slower pace over the next decade and a half compared to the past 15 years.
This was highlighted by President Jioji Konrote at the International Labour Organisation High Level Tripartite Dialogue on Future of Work in the Pacific in Suva.
Konrote says that Globalisation and technology has increased competitiveness across countries and impacted the way we work and internationalised production systems.
He says these development changes test our traditional understanding of jobs, work places, terms of employment, and safety nets such as pension schemes.
The President emphasised that the challenge for us as a region is to understand that the future is not pre-determined and together we should influence and shape the future of work in the Pacific through the high-level dialogues.
Konrote stresses that it is important for Governments, employers’ representatives and workers’ representatives to use this forum to express your views and engage in as much dialogue as is needed.
The President stresses that it will help us to address our commitments to decent work and achieving social justice.
