Police have assured some residents of Jittu Estate in Raiwaqa that Police will improve their response time to calls for help regarding disturbances caused by some youths in the area.
Residents of Jittu Estate had raised concerns about their safety, fearing they will soon be rendered helpless in keeping themself safe while carrying out simple activities around their houses.
We have received calls from a resident who says he has notified the Grantham Police Post about the groups of drunkards in the area.
He also suspects they use drugs in the area.
The resident has told us of an incident in October last year, when someone had thrown a lit firecracker inside his house and the wooden floor had caught fire.
The man says his two children were asleep in the house at the time and would have perished in the fire had they not been alerted. He says he had immediately reported the matter at the Grantham Police Post but according to him, no action was taken.
A woman from Jittu Estate has told us she has made several calls to police about groups of drunkards at the Falvey Roundabout.
The woman says her elderly aunt was bullied by some youths as she got off from the bus and her family had to run to her rescue.
When Fijivillage contacted Police on the matter, Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said that the officer-in-charge of the Samabula district and community policing officers visited the first complainant at Jittu Estate and while he was away at work they spoke with his brother and neighbors who stated that youths and school children used to smoke and drink in a vacant incomplete house beside the complainant’s house.
Naisoro says the residents can liaise directly with the officer if they need assistance in future.
People are advised to call the Southern Division Command Centre on 9905529 if they are facing any issues.
