Police are still investigating claims by a man that he was allegedly assaulted by a police officer on Monday.

Spokesperson Ana Naisoro says the man was brought in for a case of theft and he has alleged that he was assaulted by the arresting officer.

She says the man has lodged a complaint and allegations that he was held for more than 48 hours is not true as he was released within the time frame.

Naisoro says they will investigate his claims against the arresting officer to also establish the circumstances surrounding what could have transpired that led to the actions of the officer.

The complainant is alleging that he was assaulted near the Suva bus stand by an officer who was not in a police uniform.

Naisoro stresses that as the Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho has stated he does not condone the abuse of his officers abusing their authority however in the interest of fairness, a fair and thorough investigation will be conducted to ensure all sides of the story will be heard before making further comments.
