A strong call for police officers to perform their duties diligently to stop piracy has been made by the Head of Enforcement at Fiji’s Intellectual Property Office, Terrence O’Neill-Joyce.
As Fiji celebrates World Intellectual Property Day today, O’Neill Joyce said piracy is now a very active issue in Fiji and Police should step up and help solve the problem.
He said out of all the piracy related cases which they dealt with last year only five were successful.
O’Neill Joyce said people should not support businesses involved in piracy.
However, Fiji Performing Rights Association, Chairman, Eremasi Tamanisau said police officers lack the ability to properly enforce the law which protects local musicians.
He said it’s a pity local musicians are losing out because of this.
Fiji has a Copyright Act and a 2009 Amendment which protects people against piracy.
