Police officers around the country have been urged to reflect on the meaning of the Festival of Lights by ensuring good triumphs over evil during the execution of their duties.
This was the message delivered by the Commissioner of Police Sitiveni Qiliho during Diwali Celebrations at the Fiji Police Headquarters this morning.
The Commissioner says policing requires good, honest and trusted police officers.
He says police officers need to love their work as servants of the people, and respect those who they serve.
Qiliho says this is why it is unfortunate that they have had reports against some of their own who have abused their authority and powers and taken the law into their own hands.
He says the Festival of Lights marks the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and good over evil, and this is how policing should be approached whereby they are able to do good and make a difference in people’s lives.
The Commissioner says while it is a busy period for the institution going into the Election period, Diwali celebrations should also be used as a time of personal reflection.
Qiliho says as our Hindu brothers and sisters mark Diwali as a new beginning, all officers should reflect on the way they have been conducting their duties and whether or not it has been positive or detrimental to upholding the integrity of the policing profession and take steps to change for the good of the institution.
