Police have shown serious concern over the shameful claims on social media about them being allegedly involved in the death of a 17-year-old boy.
Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu says the extent to which some self-centered social media users have used the death of a 17-year-old for political gain and bring disrepute to the Fiji Police Force is extremely disturbing and shows that there are some people who will stoop so low for personal gain.
Fijivillage had asked about allegations made on social media over the death of the boy who is alleged to have been beaten up by police.
Tudravu says the post on social media claiming police were responsible for the death of a 17-year-old student is another attempt to discredit the Police Force.
He says what is truly disturbing is the lack of respect shown for the student and his family who are going through a difficult time with the loss of their loved one, only to find out that his death is being used by some cowards hiding behind fake profiles to gain attention.
The Acting Commissioner says people sharing and commenting on the post are equally guilty of adding to the suffering of the grieving family.
He says they have spoken to the grieving parents who have refuted all claims made of police brutality.
He says their condolences go out to the family and they will be conducting an investigation into those responsible for the post.
