Police have picked up a worrying trend whereby children as young as 9 years of age are seen roaming the streets of major towns and cities in the early hours of the morning.
This was highlighted by Chief Operations Officer, ACP Rusiate Tudravu who adds that this puts the spotlight on the lack of adequate supervision and we hope this will change in the coming days.
He says that as children enter the last week of the 2017 academic year, Police are pleading with parents and guardians to reiterate the importance of safety over the school holidays.
ACP Tudravu says that Police officers have been sent out to schools over the last two weeks to talk to students and have been overwhelmed with the support shown by teachers in disseminating safety messages as they aim to keep our children from becoming victims of crime and from any harm.
However, Tudravu says that in order to successfully achieve that, Police are asking parents and guardians to continue the momentum and prioritize the safety of their children above all other obligations this festive season.
He adds that with a lot of social gatherings and engagements anticipated, the safety of our children is often disregarded.
ACP Tudravu also stressed that in the event a child becomes a victim of crime Police will explore the issue of negligence and will not hesitate to lay appropriate charges.
He says that Police are making this plea for our children as they do not want to receive any reports of drowning's or fatalities and they need everyone's support to keep them safe.
