November and December 2016 recorded 48 young persons under the age of 18 years involved in crime-related activities.
This was highlighted by the Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho while speaking to students at the Suva Grammar School Annual Prize Giving Ceremony today.
He says that out of the 48 juvenile cases, 28 were against property for burglary, theft cases and 9 were sexual crimes.
Qiliho adds that highlighting these statistics may hopefully get young people to think twice when planning activities for the school holidays.
He also stressed a famous saying that “an idle mind is the devil’s workshop” and has pleaded to parents that they invest their time in their children during the school holidays.
Qiliho says that Police need the assistance of parents and guardians in keeping children safe during the holidays.
Meanwhile, Year 13 student Evia Batirerega who took out best prizes for English, Maths, Computing, Economics and Accounting was also awarded the DUX of Suva Grammar School for 2017.
Batirerega says that the challenge for any student is balancing when to have fun and when to get down to studying to be able to achieve the goals they have set.
She has also urged her fellow students to be wise with their choices during their school break and to keep working hard to strive for excellence.
