A third year student at FNU Ishwari Pillay who is doing Bachelor of Physiotherapy is aiming to do a survey that aims to describe the selected cardiovascular risk factors among Primary School Teachers in Suva and advice on how they can prevent it.
Pillay says a study done in 2016 in Nigeria shows that 80% of teachers with pre‑hypertension were previously not aware and this could probably be due to stress.
She says the choice of teachers will be based on the outcome of an extensive literature review which showed that there was very limited information on teachers in the Pacific despite the fact that they are prone to repetitive work related stress which may increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.
Pillay says this study will inform teachers the risks that they may probably be having and not aware of them and it will therefore help teachers to address these risks early and prevent future occurrence of cardiovascular diseases.
She adds that she aims to start her research once proper approvals are obtained and the study is expected to take seven months.
