Physical education implants key values and life skills which form the foundation for a child’s successful future.
This was highlighted by the Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy while officiating at the opening of the Technical Working group Quality Physical Education training workshop.
Reddy adds that Physical Education implants values such as discipline, responsibility, how to cope with both success and failure, confidence and other positive behavioral patterns related to individual or team sports.
The Education Minister stressed that sports and physical education is actively incorporated in the Fijian Education system through the Physical Education curriculum.
He also highlighted that this supports the healthy living of children.
Reddy says this is well aligned to the Philosophy of Education in Fiji which places the child at the center of learning and contributes to the development of the child spiritually, intellectually, culturally, socially, emotionally, aesthetically and physically.
The Education Minister also highlighted high number of NCDs affecting children nowadays is a growing worry.
Reddy says that the Education Ministry has quality physical education programs in school and there is no doubt students health will be enhanced further and healthier lifestyles will be adopted.
He stressed to the participants that the collaborative effort from all, will engineer the Quality Physical Education Curriculum Policy which will be introduced in the Fijian Education system.
The Education Minister also challenged the participants to explore various possibilities of partnerships with various private and public sector organizations including the communities and see how these can be effectively put in the quality physical education policy.
