People who lost their ID cards can still vote - Saneem

With three hours remaining for people to cast their votes, Supervisor of Elections Mohamed Saneem has stressed that people who have lost their voter ID cards can still cast their vote.

At a press conference this afternoon, Saneem said that a number of cases were received by presiding officers from various polling stations in regards to this.

As voting continues, other cases has been received from voters, presiding officers and party agents.

Saneem highlighted a case of an elderly citizen who signed in place of six other voters however he has assured those voters who were affected that they still can vote.

He added that other concerns raised include some party agents not having authorization letter from their party with the party stamps to be observing the voting process.

In other cases, Saneem highlighted that polling at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School started late.

He added that in some cases, voters turned up at the wrong polling stations while some did not have their voter ID Cards.

Saneem has confirmed that a large bulk of voters have cast their votes and is urging people to avoid turning up late in the afternoon.

More than 527,000 people are expected to cast their vote at 1460 polling stations around the country.

Saneem confirmed at a press conference that 598 polling stations are in operation in Central division, 568 in the Western

division, 274 in the Northern division and 25 in Eastern division.

Saneem is urging voters to raise their queries with presiding officers if they need help.

He has also encouraged people to text their electronic voter registration number to 545 to find out about their polling station
