The People of Silana Village in Tailevu are still traumatised after Cyclone Winston and fishermen and women only fish close to shore.
This was highlighted by Silana Village Turaga-ni-Koro, Savenaca Seru after receiving a timely donation of three Marine Safety Grab Bags from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
He says that their main source of income in Silana is whatever they can get from the sea and take to the Nausori market and he is relieved to know that this assistance will help protect their lives at sea.
The Turaga-ni-Koro says that the people of Silana see this as a blessing as they continue to try to rebuild their lives.
Food and Agriculture Organization Fisheries Consultant, Apisai Sesewa says that each bag contains a personal locator beacon, a strobe light, a signaling mirror and whistle, a rescue laser and sea rescue streamer, a handheld marine VHF radio, a sea anchor, three manually inflatable life jackets, a directional compass, a first aid kit and two thermal emergency blankets.
He says that the Fisheries officers will assist in the distribution and train the local fishermen and women in the use of the Marine Safety Grab Bags.
