People need to safeguard and maintain the traditional i-Taukei custom and culture and a good way to do that is to get a formal education in i-Taukei culture.
Those were the words of Amelia Tuilevuka of the Centre for i-Taukei studies at the UniFiji who says they are facing a major problem which is to inspire the young people to take up i-Taukei studies.
Tuilevuka says they are having quite valuable loss in the identity and culture but the i-Taukei courses being offered at the University will act as a platform where students can learn about the traditional i-Taukei ways and safeguard the culture.
She says they are trying to get iTaukei students to be interested as students relate more to the Western culture and they want jobs that are highly paid but they do not seem to see the value of how they can safeguard their culture.
Tuilevuka says they would be trying to do community outreach programs with the help of the District officers to reach out to students.
