Patterson Brothers Transport Limited has been convicted for failing to file Tax Returns to the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority.
The company pleaded guilty to all eight counts of failing to file tax returns.
FRCA’s CEO Visvanath Das says the company failed to lodge tax returns from 2008 to 2015 and was imposed a fine of $12,000 by the court.
The maximum penalty for failing to file tax returns is $15,000 or 12 months imprisonment or both.
However, Das says effective from 1st August, the maximum penalty will be increased to $25,000 or 10 years imprisonment or both.
Das says this case is a reminder to the business community to file tax returns in a timely manner.
He says despite numerous awareness campaigns, some businesses continue to cheat the system and the Authority has no other choice but to prosecute such offenders.
