Parliament has unanimously noted the contents of the Review Report of the Committee on the Fiji Police Annual Report 2013 which was tabled in April.
The Chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense, Netani Rika says they have agreed on three recommendations in the report.
He says the leadership challenge of mitigating the high turnover of heads of the organisation is a concern that affects the morale of the Fiji Police Force and quality service delivery in the law and order.
The second recommendation is to consider appropriate resources such as financial and technical support to shape and modernize a Force fit to carry its duties on a 24/7 basis without fear, favour and malice.
Rika says there is a need for additional finance for the maintenance, upgrading and renewal of existing infrastructure such as officers accommodation and amenities.
While speaking during the debate, Opposition Leader, Ro Teimumu Kepa says in terms of physical training, she thinks Police really need this and they need to look fit and look like they can run better than anyone of them.
She believes Police Officers need a lot of physical training which is alluded to in this report.
Ro Teimumu says they are asking what is the succession planning model used by the Force for filling senior positions when they become available.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Jone Usamate says the government has also recognised the issue of a leadership challenge.
He says if one wants to change any kind of organisation, the biggest thing that can be done is to improve the leadership as without a good leader no organisation can flourish.
Usamate says the Commissioner of Police is doing his best to develop this so they can have a good impact on the service delivery.
