The government’s motion for the Auditor General to submit the audit of the whole of government financial statements to year ending 31st December 2015 within 15 months of the end of that financial year was passed in Parliament yesterday.
While moving the motion, Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says this will allow the Office of the Auditor General to deliver a report to the Speaker and to him and the report will be tabled in Parliament today.
Sayed-Khaiyum says there was also some absurd allegations that was made that the delay from the Auditor General is causing grave doubts on the authenticity of the report and it ignores the independence of the Auditor General.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the claims by Professor Biman Prasad through the media that said the delay is a “gross breach of the constitution” is legally not correct.
Meanwhile, Professor Prasad says the fact is that the Attorney General has brought this motion seeking the resolution of the house, and this suggests that there was a breach of the constitution.
Prasad says the Auditor General’s report is a very important report.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the constitution does not provide any time limit as to when the Auditor General should provide the report to the Minister responsible.
29 parliamentarians voted for the motion while 15 MPs voted against it.
6 parliamentarians did not vote.
