The opposition’s motion to call on the iTaukei Land Trust Board to explore innovative options for land use to help develop small and medium mataqali enterprises, was defeated in parliament.
While moving the motion, Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu said that this will make TLTB play a role based on innovation and productivity that will help accelerate the iTaukei community into the commercial sector with better protection assistance.
Bulitavu says this will take care of major concerns for an effective use of land and empowerment of land owners and increase in agricultural production which is all good for the national economy.
Prime Minister and Minister for iTaukei Affairs Voreqe Bainimarama says there is no need for the motion as TLTB also runs financial literacy training for mataqali members interested in growing their businesses.
Bainimarama says the government has already embarked on a land mark reform and review program to identify new innovative strategies to maximize the benefit to landowners.
25 members of parliament voted against the motion, 15 voted for it and 8 parliamentarians did not vote.
