Parents and guardians need to play a more active role in the lives of children whether they need special care or not.

Close to 200 children gathered at the Hilton Special School to celebrate ‘Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Day’ together with the Universal Children’s Day, the CEO of the Hilton Organisation Sureni Perera says that parents need to be more active in their children’s lives especially if they have special needs.

Perera says some parents do not send their children to schools because they are special.

She says parents do not realize that it is the very reason they need to send their children to school.

The Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Dr Josefa Koroivueta who was the chief guest at the event reminded the children of their rights and responsibilities especially of their right to non-discrimination.

Children were urged to remember the free child help line number 1325.

Koroivueta also acknowledge the Hilton Organizations Audiology Unit which was set up in March this year.

He says it is the first of its kind in Fiji and has the capacity to screen hearing disabilities in Infants.

Koroivueta says 72 children have already been tested.

There are six schools under the Hilton Organizations.
