The Public Rental Board will officially open 36 new flats at Kalabu Rental Estate today and these units will be available to low income earners.
Tenants will pay a maximum of $50 per week for the 1 bedroom flats.
PRB’s Acting General Manager, Patrick Veu says tenants who are financially disadvantaged and cannot pay the $50 rent will be given a government subsidy.
Veu says the government had given $2.4M in 2014 for the construction of the flats.
He says some of the flats have already been given out due to the demand while others will be allocated after the opening today.
When Fijivillage asked if the demand is being met, Veu says there is a huge demand for these flats and the government is looking into partnerships for the construction of more flats.
The flats will be officially opened by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama this afternoon.
