The Prime Minister’s Office made it’s submission to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights today, saying that they fully support the new law and the change of the Fiji flag.
Deputy Secretary Policy Division from the Prime Minister’s Office, Peniana Lalabalavu says the National Flag Protection Bill and the Coat of Arms Bill will give due recognition to our national symbol.
Meanwhile committee member, Niko Nawaikula says the National Flag reflects the State and the Union Jack reminds him of the legacy, and Fiji should consider the importance of the legacy.
Another opposition committee member, Semesa Karavaki says we are at the crossroads and we should consider that what happened in the past is important.
An official from the Prime Minister’s Office, Joeli Besetimoala says Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has already stated that they support the bill and they will not make any further comments.
SODELPA MP, Viliame Gavoka also made a submission today on behalf of the Office of the Leader of the Opposition.
Gavoka says they affirm their support to retain the current national flag given its historic significance to Fiji’s people, culture, politics and economy and more importantly the people’s bond to the values and principles of Christianity.
Chair of the committee, Ashneel Sudhakar highlighted that the flag petition presented to the committee has been referred back to the Parliament.
