The Office of the Prime Minister will continue to support developments on the Rabi Island in the northern division.
This follows the grant agreement signing between the Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office Yogesh Karan and Council of Leaders for Rabi Island administrator Karia Christopher in Suva.
Karan said the grant of $155,000 in the new financial year would ensure the council’s smooth administration on Rabi Island.
Karan says that $117,000 was largely for capital projects and the immediate needs of the island to ensure the 3500 residents had improved living standards.
He adds that the projects are approved and administered by the Prime Minister’s Office to allow for small projects to be completed as per the scope of work.
Christopher acknowledged the government for the grant, which would be used for development, farming, road upgrades and assisting small businesses on the island.
Out of the $155,000 allocated, $38,000 is for operational cost which is directly managed by the council under the leadership of Christopher while $117,000 will be managed by the Office of the Prime Minister.
