Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has thanked the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe for the hospitality accorded to him and his delegation during last week’s PALM 7 Summit.
PACNEWS has reported that Bainimarama said the reception from the Japanese government was at the highest level.
He was satisfied with the issues discussed at the Summit, especially discussion on climate change affecting Pacific Island countries.
This is the first time that a Fijian leader has visited Japan in 10 years.
Bainimarama said they have come up with a lot of genuine and useful topics to talk about with regards to sustainable development, especially climate change.
He looks forward to continuing interaction with the rest of the Pacific leaders with regards to climate change.
Bainimarama also said the renewed diplomatic relations with Japan has ensured the Asian nation to take Fiji seriously.
The Prime Minister said he told all the leaders that all the countries should continue as one family and experience the ‘Pacific Way’ of looking after one another.
He said the last thing they want to do is to ostracize one of their own.
Fijian Ambassador to Japan Isikeli Mataitoga said Bainimarama spoke very candidly and a lot of people were surprised that someone could speak very frankly and yet quiet respectfully point out some of the weaknesses.
Mataitoga said he was also surprised to see the Prime Minister of Samoa walk over and shake Bainimarama’s hand after the meeting.
He said that is a positive move.
