Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has assured the UN Secretary General Ban Ki‑moon that Fiji will use its leadership position as holder of the Office of the President of the General Assembly to do everything possible to secure the rapid ratification of the Paris Agreement and spur climate action.
Bainimarama told delegates at a High‑level meeting on the Paris Agreement in New York that they have a responsibility to protect people from rising seas, powerful storms, hurricanes and cyclones, crippling floods, devastating droughts and higher temperatures.
He says Fiji is proud to have been the first country in the world to complete its domestic processes to ratify the Paris Agreement.
The Prime Minister says Fiji along with the other small island nations is on the frontlines of climate impacts.
He says the rapid entry into force and implementation of the Paris Agreement is critical for our national survival.
Bainimarama has also thanked the UN Secretary General for a consistent focused attention on the critical needs of the small island developing nations, as well as the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities with respect to climate change.
