Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says his deeply concerned over illicit financial flows, related tax avoidance and evasion, corruption and money laundering.
He says Fiji is attempting to combat this forcefully through legislations and agreements with other nations, but the process is long and enforcement requires training and resources.
Bainimarama highlighted this at the Group of 77 plus China Ministerial Meeting and interactive dialogue at the UN Headquarters in New York today.
Bainimarama says there is also a need to address the imbalances, discrimination and inequities of the global trading system, including the need for urgent correction and prevention of trade restrictions and distortions in the world’s agricultural markets.
He says striking the right balance, will allow developing countries to compete more equitably in global trade.
The Prime Minister says Fiji recognizes the important contribution that private investment must make to sustainable development, particularly in infrastructure.
He says developing countries are the most affected by lack of sustainable and resilient infrastructure, and they face serious financing challenges resulting in a wider global infrastructure gap.
