Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the Ministry of Local Government will be working closely with local municipalities to carry out a campaign to remove any dangerous wild dogs from our communities.
This is after 2‑year‑old Amari Whippy got seriously injured after stray dogs attacked her in their family compound at Narewa in Nadi on Friday. She had to undergo emergency surgery.
On his official Facebook page, Bainimarama said the Ministry of Local Government will be working closely with local municipalities, both in Nadi where the attack occurred and throughout the country to remedy this issue by carrying out a campaign to remove any dangerous wild dogs from our communities.
He says all strays will be treated as humanely as possible, with sheltering and re‑homing options to be explored for non‑violent dogs.
Bainimarama says his heart broke when he first heard about the stray dog attack on the girl.
He stresses that no person, let alone a little girl should suffer through such a terrifying ordeal.
The Prime Minister says his prayers are with little Amari and her family as she recovers and those prayers are being met with action.
Bainimarama says make no mistake, serious steps are already being taken to ensure that no Fijian will be subjected to the mental and physical scars of such an event again.
He has also called on people aware of an area that is frequented by a pack of wild dogs to report it by calling their local municipal authorities.
