“We cannot let the global community avoid their responsibility.”
This is the sentiment of Prime Minister and outgoing Chair of the Pacific Islands Development Forum Voreqe Bainimarama while closing the PIDF meeting in Honiara yesterday.
Bainimarama says that we face everything from inertia to reluctance to staunch opposition from special interests that will continue to pollute our oceans and if we leave the global community unchallenged, they will avert their eyes from the problem as they will not like what they see.
He says the global community will not put their shoulders to the wheel for a solution as they think it is too hard and would require too much sacrifice.
Bainimarama adds that governments, civil societies and private sectors’ voices, knowledge and expertise form the backbone of the Pacific’s campaign to alert the world to our peril and to jolt the industrialized nations into action to save our people and protect our oceans for future generations.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister of Solomon Islands Manasseh Sogovare will become the new Chair of the PIDF.
