Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has told a High‑Level Meeting on Movement of Refugees and Migrants at the United Nations that the tragedy that has unfolded because of the global refugee crisis tugs at the heartstrings of every Fijian.
Bainimarama co‑chaired the meeting alongside the Deputy President of Kenya.
He says Fiji wants the world to approach the refugee crisis in a manner that places human rights and human dignity above all else.
Bainimarama stressed that Fiji is a nation that markets itself as the place where happiness finds you and Fijians pride themselves as people who have big hearts and caring nature, especially for those in distress.
He says Fiji makes a disproportionate contribution to United Nations Peacekeeping because it feels very strongly about the need to protect defenseless ordinary people in troubled parts of the world.
Bainimarama adds that the issue of climate change displacing large numbers of people is of particular concern to Fiji.
He also says that Fiji has set up a modest specialist unit funded by itself to research various legal issues arising from climate change and refugees.
