According to the Land Transport Act 1998 and the Land Transport Regulations 2000, vehicle owners found to be illegally modifying their hybrid vehicles without the knowledge of LTA will be issued with fines.
LTA has stated that the maximum penalty for this offence carries a fine of $1000 or six months imprisonment.
It has been stated by LTA that vehicle owners who want to modify their hybrid vehicles need to get approval from LTA first.
LTA has stated that in the past, illegal electric wiring from high current lines has led to electrical fires, which could have been avoided if advice had been sought from LTA.
Meanwhile Asco Motors Financial Controller and Company Secretary, Ronald Kumar recommends that all Toyota hybrid vehicle owners, prior to engaging in any electrical repairs or modifications on their hybrid vehicles, should consult a certified Toyota hybrid service workshop.
Kumar says in Fiji, ASCO Motors is the only certified Toyota hybrid workshop.
