More than 200 people from the four divisions around the country who have applied for the New Zealand Recognized Seasonal Employer Scheme turned up today for their medical checks.
The first thirty successful applicants under a pilot program are expected to leave next month.
Minister for Employment Joji Konrote said after the medical check today, the applicants will go through a physical check with the Police this Saturday.
Konrote said this is a chance for the people in the rural areas to make a living, save and think of their families.
A mother of five of Naseakula village, near Labasa, Asenaca Divavi was emotional when she was told to attend the medical check.
Meanwhile Rohitesh Ravindra of Labasa said he has come through tough times however he has never lost hope.
The employment term in New Zealand is for seven months and the rate is $14.50 per hour.
People will work in apple and grape farms.
Meanwhile applicants are to be registered under the National Employment Centre and should have a valid Fijian passport.
They should be unemployed, living in a rural setting, hold a National Medical Card issued by the Ministry of Health, have a Police Clearance, and a general health Medical Clearance.
Applicants must also be English literate, have some skills in agro‑farming and have the clearance to travel overseas.
