More than one thousand families living in informal settlements on iTaukei land between Lami, Suva and Nausori will be given 99 year residential leases once the Town Wide Informal Settlement Upgrading project is completed.
General Manager of the iTaukei Land Trust Board, Alipate Qetaki says this is to ensure that these people will have their own lots or land title and have better access to water, sewer services, electricity and roads.
An MOU had already been signed between the TLTB and the Ministry of Housing and Local Government to have a development lease in Qauia and Nadonumai in Lami, Wakanisila settlement in Kalabu and Waidamudamu settlement in Koronivia last year .
Qetaki said these people will pay the leases and the landowners will benefit as they will receive land rent and premium.
Government had allocated $3 million for this project in the 2015 national budget.
