Opposition calls for investigation into sacking and resignation

SODELPA MP Aseri Radrodro.

The opposition is today calling for the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission to investigate the recent sacking of some LTA workers including a Divisional Regional Manager and the resignation of Latileta Qoro from the South Pacific Stock Exchange.

Although the reasons for the dismissal and resignation have been made clear by the two employers, SODELPA MP Aseri Radrodro said that despite the growing number of corrupt allegations against institutions like the LTA, workers of this country need to be assured that they will be granted their rights to be heard before a professional tribunal, where they can be asked to answer to charges if they appear to have done wrong.

Radrodro questioned as to where is the justice in ensuring every person is innocent until proven guilty before a court of law.

LTA has stated that for actions that reflect a substantial neglect of workers duty, the Board of Directors of LTA dismissed five of its employees last Friday.

LTA Chairman Vijay Maharaj

LTA Chairman Vijay Maharaj says because this is a summary dismissal it requires no obligation to give an opportunity for a hearing of those dismissed.

Maharaj says that they have said it before that the LTA board will not tolerate any actions that interfere with the efforts of their hard working employees.

He says the board and its executives want to ensure that the LTA operates a clean healthy operation.

Latileta Qoro resigned from her position after a serious oversight in the Fijian Holdings Limited Special General Meeting earlier this month.

The stock exchange that oversaw the count of the new FHL Class A shareholders’ director election had announced a preliminary count at the special general meeting that said that Ulaiasi Taoi had the most votes however the stock exchange later confirmed after a recount that Yogesh Karan is the new FHL director.

Yogesh Karan

The stock exchange board led by Chair, Nur Bano Ali says that they take full responsibility for the errors made by their CEO and management at the Special General Meeting in releasing the preliminary incorrect results.

The South Pacific Stock Exchange board said that the final results of the election of the Class A director confirmed Yogesh Karan as the new FHL director.

Karan got 2.8 million votes while Taoi got 1.9 million votes.

The board says that this is after three counts and validating all the votes cast to ensure full inclusion.
