Only government commercial companies and statutory authorities such as Water Authority of Fiji and National Fire Authority are audited by the Auditor General’s office.
Permanent Secretary for Public Enterprises, David Kolitagane confirmed this when he was asked to clarify why some of the entities such as University of the South Pacific are not audited by the Auditor General’s Office.
Kolitagane said that he cannot comment further on the entities that fall outside the Ministry.
The Chairman of Public Accounts Committee, Ashneel Sudhakar then asked Kolitagane why some of the entities do not submit their annual reports on time.
Kolitagane said most of their accounts are up to date.
Sudhakar again asked him to explain if there is any monitoring system that ensures that the reports are submitted on time.
Kolitagane said that they send the reminders to the CEOs and they follow that up to ensure that the entities pick up on the delays.
He said that discussions are underway to strengthen their monitoring functions and to address the issues that are continuously raised by the auditors.
